Think Like a 3rd Grader

We've been homeschooling this year (which decision we made when Grace began reading in Italian only), and Freeman answered a math question just as a 3rd grader should have. I thought you'd enjoy his thought process.

Here's the problem:

"Brenda had 9 nickels in her pocket. She gave 3 nickels to her sister. Write a question for this story."

(the answer should be something like: How many nickels did Brenda have left in her pocket?)

Freeman wrote:

He is a curious and smart boy! The other day he wanted to know how dust is formed...while we were playing the piano! And, if you don't know the WHY, that's a problem, too...

That is really cute! We almost decided to homeschool when we were overseas--I really like the idea of homeschooling & think it would be fun. In the end our kids were at a British school, so they learned British spelling for words, British history, etc. We tried to do a little extra work after school to help them remember American spelling, history, currency, etc. We probably didn't do enough, because our 3rd grader couldn't remember what quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies were when he started school in the US this year. (He's picked it up, though.)
Tell Freeman Hello from Cole! WE love you!
